Registration! Registration will be formatted very similarly to 2011 but I might be accepting entry cards a bit later this Spring, early Summer. Stay tuned. I am anticipating taking postcards sometime in May.

Man...how about that weather!? The Heck is getting the terrible reputation as a fair weather event. Someday the other shoe shall fall. Until then, I hope everyone soaked in the beautiful Fall colors.

Thank you to all who participated. As an organizer, it is great getting to know the riders more each year. And it is equally rewarding meeting new riders as they test their mettle in the world of gravel road cycling. I think the events of the AGRS are the greatest probably in the world, and the riders some of the finest citizens on earth. You help make these rides what they are. Excellent.

A huge Thanks to the Buffington family for hosting yet another great post ride party.

Special awards go to Cory Oseland for finishing the Tandem category solo (including Pleasant View Hill) after his partner Ted Klehr succumbed to cramps on Seven Bridges Rd. Also to Dominic Talerico who walked in from Seven Bridges after a catastrophic derailleur failure.

Kristin Riching, for the second time in three years, was the first female in at 6:52. Ted Loosen finished first among the men at 5:40:31. Impressive. Please see the Results 2011 Page for complete list of finishing times.

And to all that finished or attempted to, congratulations! You show the beauty in the sport of gravel road cycling.

Almost there!

I will be registering riders on Friday evening at my house from 5 to 8PM. 1314 East 6th Street.

I will be at the start on Saturday, October 1 at 6:15 AM. Registration is from 6:30 to 7:50 AM. Start at 8 AM sharp. If possible, have signed waiver in hand. I will have waivers at registration as well. See Heck blog for North Shore Parking Lot location.

Please help keep this a free event. How? Donate to the raffle for a pair of Hed wheels, Twin Six and Cars R Coffins jerseys, Salsa goodness and more. All proceeds go to keeping this thing sustainable (not into my pocket...)

The After Party

In this flurry of recent posts, here is the most important! The good Buffington Family will continue the festivities post ride with their fine hospitality and even finer home brew. Jason cooks up some of the best beer this side of the Divide. For those sticking around town on Saturday after the event and to those lucky enough to call Duluth their home...please stop by for some incredible company. Jason and family are incredible hosts and we are so lucky to have them again this year. Enjoy backyard bonfire and plenty of warm places to re-tell the day's adventure.

The Buffingtons will have a few snacks and said brew. Please bring a snacking item if able. The party begins as soon as Jason cleans up after his Heck ride (4 pm-9pm).

Directions to their place will be available at the start. We hope to see you there!!

Refueling

Please remember that there are NO refueling options along the Heck course. No gas food. No Pump n' Munches. No Halfway potluck. Please plan accordingly. You are responsible for your own nutrition. Please take this into consideration before starting the event. If this is not for you, please let me know so that others may step in.

Waiver and Field Notes

An updated 2011 Waiver will be available in the next day to be downloaded. Please print a copy and bring it signed to the start. I will obviously have some at the day of, as well.

The Roster is being updated on a regular basis now. Stay tuned to new additions and withdrawals.

Field notes will be on one page this year. Actually two...one you will receive at the start, the second will be handed out at the midpoint check-in.

All riders must have a working odometer, helmet and a signed waiver. No exceptions. And again...there will be no support bags brought to the midpoint. All food and water is to be carried by the rider. You may assist other riders on course. No other support from outside will be allowed (unless you decide to scratch or obvious emergencies. Use COMMON SENSE!)

Regarding Cancelations

Mid Summer Updates

Hi All!

I hope the Summer is finding you all active, healthy and happy.

The third annual Heck of the North is shaping up nicely for Saturday, October 1. I am just finishing the course mapping today, including a revised final 10 miles. I think it will be sufficiently Heck worthy.

Some reminders. As always, this event is a very self supported gig. All riders will be responsible for themselves during the ride. It is OK to have a support system in place...but it may only be used after you decide to pull the plug. ABSOLUTELY NO outside support is allowed while riding the Heck. Resupply bags will NOT be provided at the halfway this year. All riders will be responsible for their own water/food while on course. Again, no support (other than from other riders) will be allowed during the ride.

We have some pretty cool sponsors again this year. The Ski Hut, HED Cycling, Salsa Cycles, Twin Six, Banjo Brothers, Cars R Coffins, and more will be generously donating. A special thanks to Bernick's Distributing of Duluth, too. Check out their links on the sidebar.

The Heck is a free event. But donations are always welcome. All proceeds go toward covering expenses such as event insurance and volunteer fuel usage. Thanks for your support in keeping the Heck a self-sustaining beast.

If you know that the Heck won't be happening for you this year, please contact me so I can move riders on to the Start List.

Course Change and New Sponsor

I have changed the last ten miles of the Heck course in the name of safety, creativity, and challenge. Riders will no longer be crossing Hw 61 (the largest road crossing of the course). I am very excited about the new route. I think you will find it sufficiently tough and scenic.

I welcome the Ski Hut to the Heck of the North. The Ski Hut is Duluth's finest cycling shop and many of their great staff will be riding this year. The Ski Hut will be providing wrenching service at the start in case of last minute issues. Stop by the shop and let them know you rode the Heck.

New Changes for the Heck 2011

Hi All

There have been some spectacular gravel events this year! I commend all that have taken the leap into this crazy world of cycling.

After much thinking, I have decided to make a rather fundamental change to this year's Heck. We will no longer be transporting drop bags to the halfway checkpoint. As much as I love the idea of having a L'Eroica -esque banquet at the halfway, we will be going the opposite direction. This means no food or water at the midpoint check. No support crews, no hidden water bottles, no outside support at all will be allowed. This means that you will need to carry from the start all the nourishment that you deem necessary for your successful completion of the ride.

Why? I want to continue the idea of the adventure. I want this thing to be tough. The Heck of the North is already the most remote of the AGRS series events. I want to keep it that way. All riders will be encouraged to help each other out in any way they deem necessary. And spectators are also encouraged to cheer on the riders whenever and wherever, too.

So, as you progress in your training this summer, I would strongly suggest figuring out how you plan to carry enough water and food for your 100 miles of gravel.

Host a Cyclist for the Heck

The Heck of the North is seeking to continue and expand upon the wonderful tradition of hosting riders from out of town. This year, I would like to set up a system that will allow riders to contact hosts in Duluth. If you are interested in having an out-of-towner camp, crash or otherwise couch surf, contact me. All arrangements would, of course, be made between the host and guest. All responsibility would be held between the host and rider, too. The usual.

I will be hosting, again, a number of campers in my backyard. I think it's a great way to meet the riders that help make this event great.

Contact me if you are interested. All information will be private and all communication will be done through the host and guest.

Heck Registration for 2011

Hi All!

Welcome to the third annual running of the Heck of the North. Here are the registration guidelines.

I will be planning on 100 starters this year (up from 75, 2010).
If you finished the 2010 edition AND you send in a registration card, you will be on The Start List.
Everyone else who wants to start must send in a registration card for the lottery draw for the remaining spots.
I will start receiving registration cards April 1. Registration closes May 1. I will lottery draw soon after the close and post all riders selected for the start.
Registration cards MUST have this: Name, Sex, Email. Please write clearly!

As always, creative registration cards will earn you better station in the next life.

I think we can call this one a success!

Thank you to all the riders for making the trip up to Duluth. Thanks to all the locals that show the world what a great cycling community we have here on the North Shore.

Thank you to the Buffington family for, once again, hosting a terrific party! It is a great way to finish the day.

A special thanks to volunteers Don Johnson, Vi Finch, Lynne Bell, and Rick, Gabby, and Gretta Mangin. They helped make the day a smooth one. And thanks to Marty Star for grabbing the coffee at the last minute! Whoo Hoo!

I welcome feedback from participants and spectators about how to make 2011 even better. Please email me with comments.

Please send photos (that may be made public). I will work on an album in the coming weeks.

The Heck of the North will continue to encourage the fast, the slow and the in between to ride next year. I look to increase the numbers for next year (to 100?), allowing those who rode this year a spot, and those who are new a lottery chance.

Field Notes

As promised, here is some information about the field notes. Pictured above is a very close representation of what mine will look like (These are from Chris Skogen's Alamanzo 105...see side bar!). The symbols on the left represent rider (the fat dot) and the arrow (direction to turn). Fairly simple. The road name or number is the intersection. The odometer mileage corresponds with the intersection. Keep your eye on the odometer readings. It is very easy to miss turns when you are tired and staring at the gravel below your pedals. Card size will be about 4.25 x 5.5 inches.

This is a cheap and dirty way to view field notes. Downside is that you have to stop pedaling to change note cards. But it works.
Here is a classier way to carry and view field notes. This is made by Banjo Brothers.

The loops underneath provide ways to zip tie it to your stem and bars. Very simple and effective.

At registration, you will receive the first part of the field notes (roughly 4 cards). At the halfway, you must stop, check in, and then get the second set of cards. My cell number will be listed on the first set.

Hopefully, this makes sense.

Hey Gang

Here are a few more details for the day.

Bring a drop bag for your halfway resupply. I will transport them there and back.
I will supply plain water at the halfway
Parking is going to be tight at the start. I will be encouraging drivers to use the lot efficiently with the help of my parking lot attendant.
The after Heck Party is set for 5 pm at the Buffington's place (same as last year). If you are from Duluth, and feel like bringing something to share to eat, that would be great. If not, no sweat, just bring your stories.
Please bring a signed copy of the waiver to the start. I will be home on Friday, October 1st if you feel like stopping by to pick up cards and drop of a waiver.
If you are in need of a place to crash (tent only) I have willing hosts to help. Just email me.

I am sure that I will be posting again. The route looks great. Stay tuned for more!

2. Resupply Bag Shuttle...one person with a pickup (with topper in case of rain) or two people with cars to gather rider bags and bring them to the half way point.

3. Parking Lot Boss...someone who is not afraid to tell people where to go. We have to optimize our lot space and we may have to bring people out to the street. One to Two people.

4. Midway Check In...One person to manage the clipboard of rider names/document. Two people to manage the first pack of riders. Hand out cue cards and relay numbers to the Clipboard person. I might like to have another 1-2 people with my stop watches helping with the times of the first wave. Now...after the initial wave, I think 1-2 people will be able to manage the scene. At least two people to be able stay until all riders are accounted for....and make sure the place is spotless when we leave.

5. Sweep...I know I know...no support. But I need someone willing to drive from the start/finish lot backwards on the course to account for the last riders. Must have ability to transport rider(s) and their bikes. One to two people.

I am bending my own rules and making changes for the start list. Beginning this year, I am inviting the top 20 riders from the Heck 2009 addition to join the ride. For this year, that means the addition of only three people (the others had already been chosen through the lottery process...which I will continue next year, too.)

Also, I am inviting those that volunteered AND sent in entries this year. That will be one additional person this year.

My Own Private Heck 2010

Today I took advantage of a free Saturday morning and rode the Heck course. I wanted to look into a small route change on the northern part of the route and subsequently change the mileage readings. Turns out, I am probably going to leave it the way it was...the trail I was working with just disappears. So it goes.

Here are a few shots from the day. And yes, we have some TALL grass on the trails now. Should be either knocked down or mowed by early October. I hope...

I'm back from the Trans Wisconsin race and switching gears to be event director. The TW was an awesome adventure, one that I will not soon forget. What I love about big trips is that they often come from smaller, day trips. That's what I want the Heck of the North to be. An epic day's ride for all that will whet their appetite for more adventure in the future. Whatever that may look like to an individual.

I will be running the same course as last year with just a few tweaks. Expect the same trails and same gravel roads. I have sufficiently cleared up a few access issues form last year and feel good about the route. I hope you liked the course as much as I do.

Stay tuned for coming updates. There will be a few changes with the mid-course potluck. But I will elaborate more soon. Until then, get those rock miles in and look forward to the best early Fall gravel ride in the country.

The Start List...The Wait List...And Some Explanation

The start list has been randomly drawn (66 riders). Four people were also included by me for their significant time put toward the event (to equal 70 riders). I have revised the total number of Almanzo Gravel Road Series AGRS reserved spots to five (it was ten.) I did this to allow more non-racer type riders into the event.

The Wait List was randomly drawn as well at the time of the overall selection process. As riders drop out before the event, I will pull the next one in from the Wait List. Please let me know as soon as you can so that others might fill your spot. I will draw from the Wait List until October 1. There will be no "drop-in" riders allowed the day of the ride.

I will fill the top five points riders for the AGRS as soon as the Gentleman's Ride is tallied (the last event in the AGRS, September 18, before the Heck.) If a rider is pulled from the selected list below, I will fill that spot from the Wait List.

There will be no more than 75 riders at the start. I want to preserve the integrity of this event by both limiting the field to a somewhat manageable number and keeping the selection process as fair as possible. Luck is luck. Last year's first-in rider is now on the wait list. My friends are on the Wait List. So it goes. You can hang in there, be a top five rider in the AGRS or just hope it's 35 degrees and raining the week before the Heck. Hope!

Thank you to all that took the time to send in a card. I appreciate your good thoughts and passion for gravel cycling. Here's to a safe and grand Heck of the North 2010.

What in the World is the Heck?

The Heck of the North is a self-supported gravel cycling event. The idea was born from the great gravel rides of the South...the Ragnarok in Redwing, MN. and the Almanzo 100, in Rochester, MN. I created this ride so as to showcase all that is beautiful about cycling the best of the Northland's rock and dirt roads.

The Heck is a 102 mile predominately gravel course with sections of both rough trail and paved connectors. You are ultimately responsible for getting yourself back home in one piece. This event is totally, 100% your ride...you are responsible for YOU!

I am very happy to announce that Salsa Cycles is our key sponsor this year! Look for their generous support of all that is gravel in the Midwest! Thanks Salsa!

I will be receiving entries from March 1-31. I will then draw 75 lucky names from a hat. And that will be that. I will email those people selected to ride and I will post their names on this site. That is as fair as I can think of doing this whole process. I am obliged to keep total number of participants below 80 for many reasons including safety, logistics, and overall event feel.

There will be a handful of riders allowed to ride who are not part of the lottery. They will include the top ten points riders participating in the AGRS http://raceforthecup.blogspot.com and a few that have played a significant role in helping me with this event. I will list those participating in the AGRS.

Thanks for your participation. I can't wait to do it again. The course should be very similar to that of last year. I am actively making sure that all traveled roads and trails are OK to use for this year.

Hey Gang! I am pleased to hear that some are requesting to re-ride the Heck route as soon as this Saturday. Cool!

NOTICE, though! The Moose Mile (Cant Rd.) is closed to through-traffic. I had a productive meeting with this land owner and I do not want anyone to repeat the mistakes I made with this section of land.

SO...out of respect for this land-owner, my sanity, and the future of the Heck course...Please find an alternative route around this last trail section.

The Heck Recap

What a day! What a day. I thank you, again, for all be such good sports and great cycling advocates on this running of the first Heck of the North. You each have your own personal experiences from the day. My intent was to make this an out of the ordinary event. I hope your adventure was a good one. I know mine was.

Here is a big thank you to my parents (hats, pecan rolls and two year old shepherds), Josh Peterson (awesome trophies), Kieran Smith, Rick and Gabby Mangan, Don Johnson, Leah Gruhn, Todd and Thomas Sample, Brad Gustason, Michele Hatcher, and Avesa Rockwell (my wonderful wife) for your excellent job of volunteering. A large part of the smoothness of the day can be contributed to your work. Thanks! Thanks! (And please forgive me if I forgot someone!)

Thanks to Jason and Liz Buffington (and Matt Evingson) for throwing a great post-ride party. That was probably the best beer I have ever tasted. No kidding.

A special thanks to Patti Rowray, Sheree Christian, and Rich Hendricks for donating the coffee to the Midpoint. That was a brilliant idea and I think a real hit.

Having never ventured into the world of event creation before, yesterday (and the last few months) had a pretty steep learning curve. Overall, I am very pleased with how everything came off. Everyone got back home in relatively one piece (at least physically.) And it appeared that most had a good time. That was the goal. I will strive to keep this event one that is appealing to both the fast crowd and also to those that simply want to complete a challenging, gravel, century. I really appreciated the relatively diverse lot of cyclists that participated. I want to continue that trend.

I did make some mistakes, the biggest one involving an overstepping of land use on my part (and subsequently on your part.) I send a very sincere apology to those land owners (who I am in contact with today) and to you the rider. This was a big mistake on my part and I should have known better. I will go out of my way to try to mend this fence and avoid making a similar error in the future. Thanks.

I will continue to post relative event material here in the coming couple of weeks and then taper...until next year. I will post photos from contributors on a Picasa link from this site soon. Please feel free to send them my way if you want them to be viewed publicly.

I am really looking forward to building on the successes of this year and learning from the mistakes as well.

If you have really dug through older posts you might be wondering if the gear swap is still happening. It is on hold, currently, due to time constraints. If a Saturday had 25 hours, it might be possible. Or next year. I still really like the idea.

Important New Update!

To make a long story short...We have a new start/finish location (I know, I know...this makes number three change!) The end result is that I was able to add both more gravel and more mileage. The total distance is now 102 miles!

Due to circumstances that were somewhat out of my control we are moving to the North Shore State Trail parking lot on Martin Rd. in northern Duluth. Here is the location:

The North Shore State Trail www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_trails/north_shore/index.html is a multi-use trail mainly used for winter snowmobiling. This parking lot is plenty big to hold us, plus it has toilet facilities. Its location is great for a new start and finish. A big thanks to the MN. Department of Natural Resources for letting us use it for the day.

Weekend Festivities

It's going to be a fun weekend! Here's what's on deck right now...

FRIDAY:
I will be home welcoming the few that are staying at my campground (No Vacancy). I will also be happy to pre-register you (number, drop bag and waiver). I will have my grill on if you are in need of fire. Feel free to bring a beer and hang out, too. I live a stone's throw from the Burrito Union http://www.burritounion.com, one of my favorite local eateries. They have Fitger's Brewhouse Beer on tap and have great pre-ride food. They have also generously donated two growlers of their finest beer to us! We will raffle these off on Saturday morning before the ride. Check them out!
I will be shutting down (in theory) by 9 Pm. Lots to do the next day.

SATURDAY:
After the big ride we have something special planned. A fellow Heck of the North rider by the name of Jason Buffington has prepared not one, not two, but TEN gallons of his homemade brew...the "Rossini Dry Rye" and "Moose Mile Stout"! He and his wonderful family have very generously offered their home to us (riders and their families) in order to relax, re-hydrate and share stories of gravel greatness. They will have some light snacks and the grill fired up, too, for your byo meat. Feel free to bring snacks or beverages to share. The party will start at around 5 pm and go until 10. I will email directions to their place to registered riders. I hope you can join us for a great Duluth night.

Holy Cow! What a last minute response...impressive! But alas...the store is now closed. If we have not communicated in some form, either by pony express, electronically or telepathically...you will have to wait until next year. Or, come up and watch the show and visit our beautiful piece of the world.

As numbers were tallied last night it became painfully clear. We have maybe a handful of volunteers. This means that you MUST have a contingency planned for the unexpected. If that means a friend available to pick you up, fine. If that means you will walk back to the finish...fine.

DO NOT EXPECT A RIDE OR OTHERWISE FROM THE HECK CREW!!!! YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!

We simply do not have the person power to respond to that. We will of course do everything in our power to assist...it just might be little or of no help. I think I am clear on this.

But THANK YOU for the response! I am really excited about the day! Thanks for taking the time to see this bit of country by these means. You are cool!!

My Own Private Heck

Today I had the opportunity to ride the course one more time before the real show. My wonderful wife took over kid duty and I was blessed with incredible weather. The cycling gods shown brightly today. Seeing how I will be busy doing the organizational thing on the event day, I felt lucky to get one more ride in. Here are some highlights:

50 degrees and calm at start. 69 and sunny at finish with only a light breeze off the Lake. Could not have been a better day.
The first Fall colors are starting to show on the road-side maples. The grass is starting to smell dry (in spite of all the rain we've had). There was wood smoke lingering above one of the northern most roads. Starting to feel like the change of season up here.
The flickers are hanging out on the gravel roads. The broad winged hawks were everywhere. Still plenty of deer with their yearlings. The very friendly sled dog still came out and ran with me for a while. Crickets were busy chirping in the tall grass by the road.
Trails: The Brimson snowmobile trail is great. Not to0 physically trying today. But still plenty wet through the 30 foot bog. Wet footed it up to my shins. I have the feeling this one is not going anywhere. The North Shore Trail done got mowed. Our friends at the MN DNR must have hit it recently. This is both good and bad. Good because you probably wont lose your deraileur in the tall grass now. Bad because you have to ride over all the grass, raspberry and hazel trimmings. Plenty of water, too. This is a very tiring section. But I rode 95% of it. The final Moose Mile is as ugly as ever. Two words: slow and slow. There is a lot on this portage that could mess up your world (mainly your wheels). I rode 80 % of this, but very carefully. Be fore-warned. Take it easy on this one!!!
My ride: "Lulu" the Clockwork 29-er. Gearing: 34 x 16. Tires: Speedmax 35c cyclocross. Still feels right.
Numbers: Total route distance 96.26 miles. Total time: 6 hrs, 54 min. Total time pedaling: 6 hr, 30 min. First section ave. speed: 15.34 mph. Second section ave. speed: 13.8 mp

The Campground is Full

Well. That didn't take long...but the Kershaw campground has no vacancy. Pancakes will be served sharply at 6 am the morning of the ride. I am awaiting clearance for a Friday night fire and beer sampling. More to come.

Homemade!

Man...what a cool group of people. We have got the potential to have locally made beer from one of our riders. We have a rather well known brewery in town ponying up two growlers. We have winners caps being made by yours truly. And more trophies being forged down Cities way? (This is kind of a cool mystery. I'm curious to see what pans out here).
I want this event to be different than the usual pay an entry fee and everyone gets a medal type of affair. So far, I feel that it is.
UPDATE:
1. I have room for one or two more tents in my yard. Another local rider has generously offered his yard for a few lucky participants. Let me know what you need and I will try to point you in the right direction.
2. I have official numbers now...so...if your creative juices ain't flowing or you don't have a weird box full of useless race bibs...we got you covered.
3. I will be riding the route in its entirety again this week. The total mileage will be close to 95 (Yes...this is somewhat down from the estimated 104) But I HATE out and backs just to get to some number. So, if you need to say that you done a hundred, there is more than enough lake front road at the finish to get you there. Otherwise...I think it's perfect (and plenty challenging) the way it is.

Course Update!

The field agents are back from their recon of the route. And the report was EPIC! OK...they rode in possibly the most difficult conditions of the Summer...so that has colored the story.

I am obliged to recommend-disclose-WARN the good riders of this event that there might be some wet feet potential...primarily at a spot on the first trail (or "PORTAGE" as I like to call them now). Charlie and Ek were up to their knees in a boggy spot that I had TWICE been able to walk through without getting wet. So, be advised that dry socks should be included in your half-way resupply bag.

Another consideration are the trails in general. I mentally think of them as portages. They are a means in which to connect sections of gravel together. They are a refreshing break from the rigors of the road. They are NOT classic singletrack! BE prepared to WALK! There are some nasty, rocky, tall grass, eat your deraileur sections! I would not consider them your usual sweet riding fair. They are not steep or otherwise life threatening by any means. They are simply ugly to ride through. But like I have said before...I have ridden through them all under non-rain conditions. But like this weekend...be prepared for a slow go.

September is one of my favorite months...but who knows what the weather will hold. Be smart about your clothing options (pack for sunny and 70 AND raining and 40).

A Few Reminders

Hey! The entries are coming in! An official test ride with sonar, GPS, radar and the Queen's own Royal meter stick will be incorporated by Charlie (and Eki?) to establish the validity of my odometer readings. By the way...if you have not yet been reading Charlie's blog, you're missing out on a true piece of cycling Americana. Some call him the Cronkite of Cycling. Other's just call him a motorcyclist's worst nightmare. However you choose to label him...don't miss his next posting.

1. Entries are due September 1.
2. Start local is The North Shore Trail Parking lot on Martin Rd and Jean Duluth
3. Start time is still 8Am. Sign in starts at 6:30 am.
4. We will supply numbers for bike or body display.
5. Don't forget to bring your personal resupply goods. We will have bags to put them in if you forget.
6. Don't forget to bring something for the half-way potluck table.
7. The gear swap time and place is in flux. I am working on the final details. Stay tuned.
8. I will have a couple spot open for camping at my place. These will become available after Sept. 1st when I have a better idea of numbers.

What to Ride to the Rodeo

There might be a few of you who are new to the gravel road ride scene. Having been newly inducted this Spring, I too, am relatively new to this type of riding. So here are a few of my personal insights on the ride and other gear.
I ride a custom, steel, 29-er made by Clockwork Bikes in Minneapolis. I designed this bike to be flexible in its endeavors...and so far it shines. It is fully rigid. I have three bottle mounts. I use Avid SD 7 linear brakes. This bike is set up singlespeed, and that is all that I have ridden for the last two years...racing, touring or trail riding. I ride a 34x 16 set up for gravel. This is perfect for me on most courses. I ride Ritchey Speedmax 35c tires. So far, these have proven to be excellent (both traction, weight, and monitarily speaking).
The real beauty of these gravel events is the variety of bikes you'll see ridden. Fixies, dual and front suspension mt. bikes, cyclocross, road and some real odd-ball three speeds have all tackled the off-paved. In my opinion, the only deciding factor when it comes to your ride is this: make damn sure you can stay comfortable on it and you know that it will get you 100 miles down the road.
Obviously, you need a reliable odometer for this event. Do not simply trust the tire tracks in front of you.
In your tool kit, I would consider adding whatever chain repair parts you deem adiquate. This is often forgoten and can be a real deal breaker in the middle of nowhere.
Please do not hesitate to ask further questions about bikes or gear. I am happy to add my two cents whenever asked.

A Word about Weather

The Heck of the North will not be canceled due to weather. Period. I might, just might, consider a delayed start...but not by much. We are short on day light at that time of the year and I do not want to burn any by sitting under some tarp or newspaper. So...prepare to ride whether rain, snow or sun. Thanks!

A Word About Support

So there have been timely questions regarding rider support during the event. After deep thought and consultation with my wife, lawyer, spiritual guidance guru, acupuncturist, family yellow lab, and two year old daughter (not necessarily in that order) I have come to the conclusion...............

There will be no outside support allowed.

I could give a very long winded explanation of why, but instead, here is the two dollar version...I simply love the purity and adventure of relying (almost) solely on one's own wits, endurance and mental fortitude (and machine). Some of the rides ("races") that I admire most are those that strictly prohibit private forms of support...meaning...love letters from your sweetie, air-mailed groupos from Campy, or team 7-Eleven style domestiques at your beck and call.

That being said, support is present in the form of your own drop bag at half-way, our water and caramel rolls, and the potluck buffet supplied by none other than your fellow rider. We will also have a sweep vehicle and other volunteers at half-way to aid in what may come up (mechanicals, meltdowns, and mis-adventures.)

I would be a fool to think that every rider will have the perfect, bonk-free ride. And I especially want everyone to finish safely. So I, and my volunteers, will do everything possible to get everyone home in one (or two pieces). But outside support will be an auto disqualification. I will have my tool kit with me...and I will gladly try to assist in a mechanical way...but that, too, will equal a DQ. But I will try to help you home on your ride.

If someone wants to view the race at the halfway...I don't have a problem with that. In fact, I appreciate the interest. Just keep it pure.

Halfway Food... Pay it Forward Potluck

So.... this ride is remote. There are no gas stations. What to do? Well, we will continue to shuttle your personal food/drink bags to the halfway point. Bring what you think you'll need to finish the last 50 miles. Here's a new twist. Donate a treat to your fellow riders for a midpoint potluck. Bring whatever you would want to eat/ drink yourself and share it with your gravel compatriots. Guidelines: no alcohol (sorry!) and items must be non-perishable (no ice cream, roast beef subs, ect...) Peanut Nut Rolls? Yes! Sealed Gatorade? Sure! Gu, Cliff, Hammer, Power, pretzels, whatever. I figure that if everyone brings a little something, we will have a great spread (coupled with your own personal stash). I will be providing fresh water and homemade caramel rolls for every man woman and child that checks in at halfway. By the way, the halfway has two picnic tables and two really nice pit toilets. And if you want more exercise, the Superior hiking trail is only feet away. But I was unable to get cell phone coverage. Fore Warned!
Again...I will be supplying water and transport of all extra food and drink. You just have to get there!

Route Scout Complete!

What a ride! I finally completed the entire route and took down all the odometer readings for the direction notes. Even with all the rain we have had recently, it was one of the fastest rides I've had this summer. The roads look great! The trails are all ride-able! I saw tens of deer, several hawks, wolf prints, bear scat and three very eager sled dogs that decided to run along with me for a mile or so. I will be showing a sample of the direction cards when I finish transcribing them. More soon.

An Event for the People by the People

I am loving the way this ride is coming together! It has been brought to my attention that a certain fellow is making trophies for the Heck! How cool is that! Even if it's a rumor, I appreciate the idea.

Which brings me to some updates:

1. Race numbers. We are taking the creative (read: thrifty...) approach. Bring your own! Create your own! Whatever. Just as long as you can pin it to your frame or body. I personally have about 15 old numbers collecting dust in my shop. If you have extras, bring em for your fellow riders. If on the odd chance two people show up with the number "31" or whatever, a black Sharpie will designate "31-A". Problem solved.

2. Gear Swap! Yes...bring your new, your tire-d, your unwanted to the first annual Heck of the North Gear Swap. Here's how it will work. If you bring something deemed swap-able, you will get a number. Numbers go in a hat. Person draws out number. You get to pick whatever you like that is left from the swap table when your number is called. No money...only a new home for great used bike gear. If we get some sponsorship (which I think we will...more soon!) those items will be thrown into the mix, too. Swap will happen AFTER the ride. Location to be determined.

3. Race start has changed locations! Due to the Lester River Rendezvous happening in full force the same weekend at, yes, Lester River, we will be starting just down the road at Brighton Beach. This location is equally beautiful (right in the shores of the big Lake). We will have a neutral roll out back to the start of the course, Seven Bridges Road on Lester River. I will keep reminding people about this as we draw near. And a special prize for any who ride in full buckskin kit!

4. I really like the postcards coming in. Fact is, I really like the creative side of cycling. Photos, sculptures, video, paintings, knitting, printing....all of it is good. I will be making a few select cycling caps to go toward some category as of yet determined. If you have something you want to donate, show or otherwise give to the Heck, let me know. I will try to find a use for it.

5. I am working on a party spot for Saturday night for those who choose to hang out in our fair city. Stay tuned for location and time.

6. Lodging...I will be the first to admit that Duluth needs more in-town camping. And I need more friends with farmland and barns and bonfire fields. But until then, here are a couple of ideas:

The Heck of the North...Northern Minnesota's Gravel Classic

Some details as of today:

1. Waiver's will be signed by all riders. No exceptions. I will provide a link to ours in the coming days. You must have one completed before the start.

2. Don't sue Charlie Farrow or me. I'm serious. We're both without significant means and it would be a giant waste of time and money. And generally people would think you're an idiot without a heart. Enough said.

3. This will be an adventure cycling experience. It might be no fun at times. You are on your own and we are not responsible for your safety or mental well-being. DO NOT count on cell phone coverage.

4. This will be mainly a gravel experience. There will be trail sections. Expect some hike-a-bike. There will be rocks, logs, mud and rough trial conditions. This is Northern Minnesota. If you're lucky, maybe wolf tracks or moose. If you're really lucky, maybe a wolf riding on the back of a moose.

5. There will realistically be only one aid station...that being the one we set up at roughly half-way. We will help supply water and provide the second half route notes at this check point. At this time, I'm thinking we will have riders prepare drop bags for themselves that we will shuttle up to the midway checkpoint. At this time, do not count on any food support from the volunteers or Charlie or me.

6. Route directions (via tulip notes) will be supplied by us at the start of the event. (To get the notes we need your signed waver). These will be accurate, simple line drawings indicating which way to turn at a given odometer reading. Obviously, your own odometer is a must.

7. This is the inaugural year. There is no prize money. There is only the satisfaction of being part of something great.

A Bit of Backround

Both Charlie and I have been very inspired by the creation of Minnesota's (and Iowa's, Manitoba's and elsewhere) gravel road racing scene. Charlie has done many more races than I have, so I will speak for myself. I was totally blown away with how much I enjoyed the Spring races in the southern part of the state this year...first the Ragnarok 105 and then the Almanzo 100. They both embody all that is right and true about cycling in the Midwest. We are hoping to add to the gravel culture a race that highlights some of northern Minnesota's finest country. We also hope that you can experience a bit of our fair city while here racing. We will be posting likely spots to pitch a tent, down a pint, slam a burrito or grab a slice. We officially look forward to having all who love gravel and a good time up to Duluth. Details to follow within the week.

Gravel...77.49 miles (74.5% of route)
Paved...22.23 miles (21.4% or route but these are not contiguous miles)
Trail...4.33 miles (4.1% split between three different sections of roughly equal length)

It Lives!

Well. I rode 95% of the route on Friday and was very pleased with the flow. Total mileage for the race should be close to 100 miles. There are a few miles left to detail at the end of the course but they will be easy to map out. I think this route has the makings of something special. A few details:

1. There will be a roughly about 85 miles of gravel/rock road.
2. There will be roughly 10 miles of paved sections/connectors.
3. There will be another 4 miles of trail, divided into three separate sections.
4. I have been using my cyclecross wheels and tires exclusively for the creation of this route. I think they are appropriate despite the trail sections. Obviously, this is the racer's decision ultimately...fatter and more comfy...skinnier and faster(?). The choice is yours. The trail represents a small but decidedly important element to this experience.

Details for event registration will be coming soon. Keep your pedal to the ground and get ready for a heck of a ride!

Route Scout

Friday will be a recon of the entire, proposed course. Charlie Farrow and I intend to map the route and see how it feels at the end of the day. Just to be clear, this event is very unofficial at this date (hopefully subject to change to more official soon.) Stay posted for photos and updates. Here We Go!

It's on! September 26, Saturday. The course is almost complete. The details are being sharpened. This is what we are thinking:
1. This will be a self-supported event similar to our sister events to the south...The Ragnarok and the Alamanzo 100. (Please see sidebar for more info on these two, outstanding events.)
2. This event will feature gravel/dirt roads primarily. There will be a few miles of connector paved roads.
3. There will also be a few miles (3-5?) of trail (gasp!). These sectors should be "ridable" with cross bikes. Those on mt. bikes may enjoy them more. I think they are really cool additions whether they are ridden or walked or run or crawled. I hope you agree!
4. Event route maps will be divided in two. Details of the second half of the route will be attainable at the halfway checkpoint only.
5. There may be no commercial aid stations (depending on the final route layout). Instead, participants will prepare bags of goodies of their own liking to be transported buy our support crew top the halfway checkpoint. Water will be available at the halfway.
